With the growing concern for the environment and increasing awareness regarding the preservation of the planet, many companies are investing in methods for recycling of their wastepaper. There are two pieces of equipment that are designed to help them in their efforts, which are paper shredders and paper balers. These seemingly simple devices make recycling paper easy and efficient.

What is a Paper Baler?

The baling of waste has rapidly grown into a major industry. Everything from cars to washing machines can be put through the baling process. The methods used for these larger items are the same as those used to bale paper, regardless of how little paper weighs.

The central part of a paper baler is the hydraulic ram that compresses the paper, under pressure, into a bale or cube. The volume of material to be processed determines the size of the baler. Unlike residential compactors, balers are highly technical pieces of machinery that are calibrated and monitored for their ability to rapidly process the tons of discarded paper. We may look at the paper that accumulates at work as being a very small and insignificant. In actuality, 84 million tons of paper and paper board are thrown away each year.

There are several types of paper balers that range from the very simple that can be found at a grocery store to ones that are highly complex that are used by waste management companies. The simplest design is the vertical baler that is loaded from the top and has a single ram. More complex balers have multiple hydraulically driven rams that compress the paper from multiple sides.

The larger balers that process tons of paper per day have added features designed to make the bales more compact and hold them together. Depending on the type of baler, the method of restraining the bales can be twine, wire, plastic wrap, or paper. These restraining devices keep the bale from falling apart and further protecting the environment from contamination.

Why Companies are Using Paper Balers

The first reason that companies are investing in paper balers is for cost effectiveness. As the number of regulations and restrictions increase regarding waste control, companies are working to lower their environmental footprint by compacting their waste to make disposal more affordable.

The concern of the general public regarding the environment is steadily growing. When they are looking for ways to spend their money, they are more and more attracted to companies that are showing the same concern. For public relations purposes, companies are bending to the will of the people and making an effort to show their efforts.
